South Canterbury Designer of the Year 2011

This year the South Canterbury Area DOY was hosted by the Timaru Floral Art Group with an overall theme of "Spotlight on Spring".

For the main Designer of the Year competition the title was “Breaking Through”.

Competition Specifications: A Freestanding table top design to be staged on an individual table (Provided)
Size: Table Top 910mm x 910mm

Excellent entries were received with sixteen in the Open section and seven in the Novice section. Carol Rains from FASNZ Canterbury Area was the judge and complimented all designers on their innovative and original interpretations of the title. Carol especially congratulated all those who had entered in the Novice section, their prowess augured well for their future in floral art.

Along with the DOY competition four members of the Timaru Floral Art Group demonstrated and spoke of the era from which they originated and gave useful tips on how to create these designs to the theme “ .....and so it Begins". The large attendance enjoyed this interlude which included a Victorian design, a Traditional asymmetrical design and two contemporary designs.

Overall winner of the Zoe Staite Trophy, for best in the competition Jan Chambers, Timaru Floral Art Group.

Contemporary Design: Marilyn Davis demonstrated a floor standing design incorporating mitred New Zealand flax dried flower stems along with the interesting manipulation of leaves.
