Canada Blooms 2010

Liz Chapman vice–president of the Floral Art Society of New Zealand and a member of the Geraldine Floral Art Group in South Canterbury won Silver with her design at ‘Canada Blooms’.

‘Canada Blooms’ is a Flower and Garden Festival held annually in Toronto. ‘Canada Blooms’ aim is to bring a love and knowledge of Gardening, Horticulture and Floral Design to the people of Toronto. There are competitive classes for horticulture and floral design and commercial garden displays. 100, 000 people visited the 6 day show.

Liz was invited by the Canada Blooms 2010 organising committee to represent NZ in the International Floral Design class. Ten international designers, from Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Ireland, NZ, South Africa, South Korea, UK and USA were invited to compete in this Class. The title for the designs in the class was ‘Contemporary Dance’.

Describing her design Liz Chapman said she decided to go modern and minimal and where possible use NZ indigenous plant material.

To portray the energy and vigour of contemporary dance I chose to use paper covered polystyrene geometric shapes, together with mitred Phormium Tenax dried flower stems, Astelia Chathmica 'Silver Spear' and Anthuriums.

All competitors in the International class were supplied with a bright pink 120cm round base and this was the starting point for my design.
