Waxing is a technique currently being used to embellish designs as well as create interesting 'containers' for floral material as shown in this design by Lorraine Usher.

The use of wool and other fibres is currently being used in contemporary designing. In this design by 2017 FASNZ President, Janthia Holt, the wool is bound to form a design component.

Felting is another contemporary trend and was included in a design by Barbara Higgins during an international imposé competition entitled Ginger and a Touch of Spice. Competitors had to include a pre-done Spice Component of their own choice. By imbedding a wire in felt tails and bending them around specially treated nutmeg, Barbara had a pre-prepared component that worked well with the other items in the imposé box and earned her design a first place.
