Inspired by a Picture
In August Liz Johnston treated us to an afternoon which was ‘a little different’. Members had to find a framed picture or painting from the ‘20s, which could be from any century from 1620 up to 2020. We had a great range of designs from Georgian to contemporary. Everyone was asked to talk about their framed pictures and the link to their design. It was an inspiring afternoon and everyone contributed to the session.
Rocking and Rolling
In September Jan Chambers showed members how to create a design using rolled flax or astellia leaves, and with minimal use of flowers or other plant material. Jan explained the mechanics for rolling the leaves to make them look impressive and the design interesting. Some members added succulents, camellias or other flowers from their garden.
This is generally a low-cost design style and can be made in a short time. Everyone went home pleased with their design.
Wonderful Weekend Workshops
Seven of our members in three cars set off from Timaru to Twizel on a weekend in October and stayed at a fabulous holiday home of one of the members.
Our first workshop entitled ‘Shape It’ saw members cut out polystyrene shapes to cover with paint, paper mache, rice seeds or other material. We then left our shapes to dry until the following day.
In the evening we completed our second design. We all had the same staging and type of plant material: two branches different in texture, colour and shape, and minimal foliage and flowers.
The following day after a leisurely stroll we continued with ‘Shape It’. Each design was different either with dried materials or fresh spring flowers.
