50th Birthday Celebration

50 and Fabulous was the overall theme of the Auckland Area Designer of the Year competition, which was held in October. It was an occasion also to celebrate the Area’s 50th Anniversary. The title for the Designer of the Year was Absolutely Fabulous and was won by Vanita Patel with her smart and cleverly staged design.

All classes were well supported and displayed innovative designs with titles: Centre of Attention for Junior, Shafts of Gold for Intermediate and Midas Touch for Senior. A new class for this event was a pre-prepared Torso displaying intricate body adornment or floral jewellery to the title Bedazzled.

Our Clubs competed in a from-the-floor design, entitled Flash of Brilliance, with Hibiscus Floral Art Group taking out not only the first place but the Nancy Murphy Creativity Trophy.
Thank you to our Convenors, Pat Murdoch, Sue Armstrong and Head Steward Ann Haszard, who worked tirelessly to ensure the competition ran like clockwork. Many friends and family were able to view the talented work of all designers the next day and support Floral Art in Auckland.

Tables adorned with golden topiaries on black cloths set the stage the next day for the 50th Anniversary celebrations. A beautiful cake had been made and iced by Allison Ingram and a delicious luncheon prepared by Sue Noble and her team at Takapuna Floral Art Club. The day was made even more special with the announcement of our three new Life Members, Elizabeth Konig, Jan Goode and Jackie Milina.

All of the Members present enjoyed our special celebration, being together and the joy that flowers bring to us all.

Area Day and DOY 2020

After being postponed on several occasions the Auckland Area Designer of the Year Competion for 2020 was finally held on the 3rd of December at the Orewa Baptist Church and was hosted by Hibiscus Floral Art Group. Better late than not at all! And it was well worth the wait as the designs were spectacular. A big thank you to everyone who persisted through all the changes in scheduling this event and particularly to the host club and Convener, Lyn Membery.

Area Day and DOY 2019

Once again the Auckland Area Designer of the Year competition for 2019 was held in conjunction with Auckland Area Day. This has become a major annual event in Auckland’s calendar.

Although Kumeu is a very small Club they volunteered to be the host for Area Day 2019 as it coincided with their 30th birthday. Congratulation to Kumeu for achieving this milestone and taking on such a major floral art activity. The two day event was held in the local school at Waimauku, a beautiful new building.

The title for the Designer of the Year was “Dare to be Different”. Lynne Causer won Designer of the Year with a stunning showpiece, benefiting from her husband’s metal work skills. All exhibitors once again excelled themselves with their innovative designs, and it was heartening to see new members taking part in competition work.

Lois, the President of Kumeu Club, got funding for a mannequin for each Auckland Club to dress. The results were spectacular. The Club first place award was won by Takapuna Club with a stunning ensemble. The school kept some mannequins for their students to see and others were later displayed in areas around Auckland.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this floral event happen and continue to support Floral Art in Auckland.
