South Canterbury Area DOY 2021

‘Artistic Energy’ gives much scope for creativity and interest

‘Artistic Energy’ was the title for annual FASNZ Inc. South Canterbury Area Floral Designer of the Year competition hosted by the Geraldine Floral Art Club.

Although South Canterbury Area gardens were still predominantly winter-dormant, members rose to the mid-winter challenge and designed with enthusiasm and skill. An early start didn’t deter competitors with seven entries in the Novice section and ten in the Open section.

Competitors interpreted the title in various ways which resulted in a range of designs for the public to enjoy in the later exhibition. Despite a cold winter’s afternoon, the exhibition was a great success and the hall was filled to capacity. Those who attended enjoyed the competition designs, a demonstration and light refreshments.

South Canterbury Area DOY 2020

In October 2020 the South Canterbury Area Floral Art Society of New Zealand Designer of the Year 2020 competition was held at the Waimate Town and Country Club and hosted by the Waimate Floral Art Group. The event was well supported by members from the five clubs in the South Canterbury/North Otago area, with twenty floral designs entered in Open and Novice sections. The design title was ‘Emerald Anniversary’ as the South Canterbury Area FASNZ was celebrating 55 years since it began. Contestants created table top designs which were judged by FASNZ judge Erin Brown of Kaiapoi.

South Canterbury Area DOY 2019

Temuka Clandeboye Group organized a wonderful day event for South Canterbury Area in November last year.

As well as hosting the DOY competition the club organized a demonstration by Annette Waller, followed by afternoon tea.

Seventeen contestants produced tabletop designs. They were judged by Annette Waller with Ruth Orange as the steward.

South Canterbury Area DOY 2018

The South Canterbury Area Designer of the Year 2018 Competition was held in August and was hosted by the North Otago Floral Art Group at the Fenwick School Hall in Oamaru.

The title, "It’s a Kind of Magic", was found to be quite a challenge for the 17 competitors with the result that we had both subtle and obvious interpretations.

Judge Dorothy Findlay from Invercargill said she thought the designs were of a very high standard which made the judging hard to do. She mentioned she was very impressed with the Novice Section (7 entrants).
