Inspiration from Sculpture
Innovative Design Tutorials
by Liz Chapman
Floral designers find inspiration from many sources. Nature, the environment and plant material are constant and enduring sources of inspiration. However inspiration can also be found from many other sources such as the allied arts including sculpture, patchwork and embroidery, painting, poetry, music and song, dance; from books, history, events and occasions, architecture, shapes and geometry.
Floral designers develop and cultivate a keen seeing eye. They notice, observe and absorb what is around them. Frequently it is these images that are the spark, the motivation, the starting point for a floral design.
'THE WEDGE'
This sculpture by Paul Jameson titled The Wedge was the inspiration for this design. The Wedge is part of the Australian National University Art Collection in Canberra.
